To my fellow party members, colleagues, and all Albertans,
My name is James Anderson, and today I am excited to announce that I have accepted by election the position of Leader of the Green Party of Alberta. I am inspired by the faith placed in me and am emboldened by our shared desire for a powerful Alberta that is innovative, economically robust, and sustainable. This is not just the conclusion of our leadership election – it is the beginning of our party’s revival.
We are the Party that represents Albertans through our principles of: participatory democracy, respect for diversity, social justice, non-violence, ecological wisdom, and sustainability. These commitments are not just slogans: They are the core to guiding our actions to empower and support Albertans.
To those who have supported me, I am deeply grateful and committed to earning your confidence each day. To those who did not choose me, I say: your dialogue and debate are essential to the democratic process. I now ask that we unite with shared purpose to build this Party and serve Alberta with vision, trust, and integrity.
We, as a Party, are faced with very real challenges in Alberta: there is a severe decline in public health and education services, an erosion of public trust in our government, and an inequitable economy that leaves Albertans exposed to poverty and suffering. This is all happening while Canada is also experiencing a severe increase in gas prices, tariff pressures from the US, and a high cost of living. Now is the time for us to stand together and meet these challenges head-on with radical solutions to restore Alberta’s place as a leader in Canada.
As your provincial Green Party Leader, my efforts are guided by the following three commitments:
- Prioritizing Albertans’ Interests. By focusing on issues they consider most important such as health care, the economy, education, and affordability.
- Advocating Transformative Policy. By leading with attainable big ideas that will systematically alter society to favour the growth and success of all Albertans.
- Strengthening Our Party. Through the rebuilding of our capacity and capabilities by introducing new official policies, engaging Albertans regularly, and further building the Party’s institutional resilience.
As the Green Party of Alberta, we will work toward providing Albertans with a clear and bold political alternative that breeds confidence. We will do this by becoming the province’s “Light from the darkness” by directly addressing Albertans’ health, education, and financial suffering with transformative and evidence-informed policy.
I recognize the great responsibility of being your Leader and fully accept the serious challenges we must navigate. We will measure our success not by popularity, but by whether families are healthy and well educated, whether all Albertans are benefiting from our economy, and whether the democratic values of our government and institutions are protected.
Today I am asking for your credence. Tomorrow we will commence the new Green Party of Alberta. Let us build a renewed Party that stands up for people’s humanity; that demands curative care for Albertans suffering; that is both bold in vision and sensible.
Together, we will endeavour to earn Albertans’ trust, face the challenges ahead with courage, and give the public the future they have a right to.
