FORT SASKATCHEWAN 

Green Party of Alberta Leader James Anderson has decided not to run in the upcoming Calgary-Shaw by-election. Instead, she will concentrate on her home riding of Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville, and run for the area’s seat in the 2027 Alberta general election. “Calgary-Shaw is not my riding,” Anderson said. “Candidates should be familiar with the community they serve, and committed to representing the interests of the region. Running simply because a seat is available does not reflect the kind of politics I want to practise.”

Accountability, first and foremost

As Alberta’s youngest and first transgender party leader, Anderson believes authenticity, integrity and local accountability must remain central to her leadership. She concluded that running as an outside—or “parachute”—candidate could undermine those principles, and distract from the Green Party’s long-term rebuilding efforts. “This decision is about putting ethics ahead of short-term visibility,” Anderson explained. “My responsibility is to stay the course, strengthen our party, and serve the community I hope to represent.”

What’s next for the Green Party

Anderson will continue concentrating on policy development, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and preparations for the 2027 general election. Her goal remains to restore the Green Party of Alberta as a strong and credible third option for Alberta voters. The party thanks everyone who expressed interest in volunteering for a possible Calgary-Shaw campaign, and encourages supporters to carry that enthusiasm into the important work ahead.
