The Green Party of Alberta opposes the separation of Alberta from Canada.
As Albertans, we understand the frustrations many people feel. Rising costs, economic uncertainty, concerns about federal policies, and a desire for greater provincial autonomy are real issues that deserve thoughtful discussion and action. However, separation is not the solution.
The Green Party of Alberta believes that Alberta's future is strongest when we work collaboratively with our neighbours, Indigenous Nations, municipalities, provinces, territories, and the federal government to address the challenges we face together.
Our position is guided by the Six Global Green Principles.
Respect for Diversity reminds us that Alberta is home to people from many cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. We are also home to Treaty Nations and the Métis people, whose rights and relationships must be respected and upheld. Alberta's future must be built through inclusion and cooperation, not division.
Social Justice calls on us to create a fair and equitable society where all people have the opportunity to thrive. Separation would create significant uncertainty for workers, families, businesses, Indigenous communities, and vulnerable Albertans. We believe our efforts should focus on reducing inequality and improving quality of life rather than creating new political and economic barriers.
Participatory Democracy encourages meaningful dialogue and democratic engagement. We support constructive conversations about Alberta's role within Confederation and welcome discussions about improving federal-provincial relations. However, these conversations must be based on facts, transparency, and a commitment to finding solutions together.
Non-Violence teaches us that conflicts are best resolved through cooperation, negotiation, and mutual respect. The Green Party of Alberta believes lasting progress comes from building bridges rather than creating divisions.
Sustainability reminds us that our economy, communities, and public institutions are interconnected. Alberta benefits from trade, labour mobility, shared infrastructure, and partnerships across Canada. Our focus should be on building a resilient and diversified economy that supports future generations.
Ecological Wisdom recognizes that environmental challenges do not stop at provincial borders. Climate change, water management, biodiversity protection, and responsible resource development require cooperation among all levels of government and across the country.
The Green Party of Alberta also recognizes that Alberta exists within Treaty territories covered by Treaties 6, 7, and 8, as well as the homeland of the Métis people. The spirit and intent of these treaties were based on sharing the land and building lasting relationships. Any discussion about Alberta's future must acknowledge and respect these foundational agreements and the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The Green Party of Alberta recognizes that the Treaties are nation-to-nation agreements that predate the creation of both Alberta and Canada as we know them today. These living agreements established a shared relationship based on mutual benefit, coexistence, and stewardship of the land.
Any proposal that would fundamentally alter Alberta's constitutional relationship within Canada must include meaningful consultation and engagement with Treaty First Nations and the Métis people, respecting their inherent rights, treaty rights, and right to self-determination. The future of Alberta cannot be decided by Alberta alone; it must be shaped in partnership with the Indigenous Peoples whose nations have lived on and cared for these lands since time immemorial.
We believe Alberta can be a strong, confident, and prosperous province within Canada. Rather than pursuing separation, we will continue advocating for policies that strengthen Alberta's economy, protect our environment, uphold treaty relationships, support local communities, and ensure that all Albertans have a voice in shaping our future.
Our vision is not separation. Our vision is cooperation, reconciliation, sustainability, and shared prosperity for present and future generations.
